The awards are divided into four overall categories; Professional, Open, Youth and Student Focus and are each dependent on the skill and ability of the photographers involved. Within each category, comes another set of sub-categories that are based on their style and meaning.

Entries for the world renowned award were said to be at a record high and have contained some of the finest and eclectic mix of photography from 2013. In its seven year history this hugely prestigious award has always captured some of the best and most original pieces of art from all over the globe from photographers of all different back grounds and has always stuck true to their word in discovering new talent within imagery.

The winner of this year's award will be presented at the Sony World Photography Awards Gala Ceremony on the 30th April in London while the shortlist images will later be presented at Somerset House, London between the 1st and 18th of May as part of the Sony World Photography Awards Exhibition.
